The sun had just gone down, smearing the sky a dark shade of red.

Crows perched on the talons of gothic-looking gargoyles, beaks wet with something like blood.

The sound of women screaming came from somewhere below the balcony, making the crows tilt their heads with interest.

‘Ah,’ said a man standing over the balcony, ‘new prisoners…’

The man looked like a raven himself. His dark hair barely concealed his grin.

‘ Praytell, where are our virgins being kept…?’
